Tokyo’s Oldest Temple

Amid Tokyo’s neon and skyscrapers sits a pocket of old Japan: the historic district of Asakusa and its beautiful Senso-ji temple. Senso-ji is the city’s oldest temple, founded in the year 645, and it remains one of Tokyo’s most beloved and visited spots. Here is what to see and know before you go.

The Thunder Gate and Nakamise Street

Your visit begins at the Kaminarimon, or Thunder Gate, with its enormous red paper lantern, one of the most photographed sights in Tokyo. Passing through, you enter Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street that has served temple visitors for centuries. It is lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs, from freshly made rice crackers to sweet ningyo-yaki cakes, so come a little hungry.

Asakusa Highlights

  • Kaminarimon: the iconic Thunder Gate and giant lantern.
  • Nakamise-dori: a historic street of snack and souvenir stalls.
  • Senso-ji main hall and five-story pagoda.
  • Great views of the nearby Tokyo Skytree.

At the Temple

At the end of Nakamise stands the temple’s grand main hall. Along the way, you can pause at the large incense burner, where visitors waft the smoke over themselves for good health, and draw an omikuji fortune slip. Take a moment to admire the striking five-story pagoda beside the hall. It is a peaceful, atmospheric place despite the crowds, especially in the early morning or evening.

Visiting With Respect

Senso-ji is an active place of worship, so a little etiquette goes a long way. It is fine to take photos in most areas, but be discreet and follow any posted signs, especially inside the main hall. Move calmly, keep your voice down near the altar, and step to the side if you stop for pictures on the busy approach. A respectful visit is a richer one.

See It on a Tokyo Tour

Asakusa and Senso-ji pair beautifully with other Tokyo highlights like the serene Meiji Shrine for a full day that shows off both the old and new sides of the city.
