Tokyo’s Most Beautiful Day Trip
When travelers want to trade the city for mountains, waterfalls, and history, they head north to Nikko. A UNESCO World Heritage town about two hours from Tokyo, Nikko packs a legendary shrine, one of Japan’s finest waterfalls, and a serene mountain lake into one unforgettable day. Here is what makes it so special.
Toshogu Shrine
The centerpiece of Nikko is Toshogu Shrine, the lavishly decorated mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years. Set among towering cedar trees, it is Japan’s most ornate shrine, covered in gold leaf and intricate carvings. Look for the famous Three Wise Monkeys (“see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”), the Sleeping Cat, and the dazzling Yomeimon Gate.

Kegon Falls
A short drive up into the mountains brings you to Kegon Falls, one of Japan’s three most famous waterfalls. Water plunges about 97 meters (over 300 feet) in a single dramatic drop. An elevator carries you to a lower observation deck for a close-up view. The falls are gorgeous year-round, but they are especially stunning framed by autumn colors or winter ice.
Nikko Highlights
- Toshogu Shrine: ornate UNESCO shrine with the Three Wise Monkeys.
- Kegon Falls: a 97-meter single-drop waterfall with an elevator viewpoint.
- Lake Chuzenji: a peaceful alpine lake below Mount Nantai.
- The vermilion Shinkyo Bridge over the Daiya River.
Lake Chuzenji
Near the top of the falls sits Lake Chuzenji, a tranquil alpine lake formed long ago by an eruption of Mount Nantai. Ringed by forested hills, it is a peaceful place to stroll, take in the mountain air, and snap photos, especially in fall when the surrounding trees blaze with color. It is the perfect calm finish after the grandeur of the shrine and falls.
