A Steaming Volcanic Valley

On many Mt Fuji and Hakone day tours, one of the most memorable stops is Owakudani, a dramatic volcanic valley where steam and sulfur rise from the earth. Its name means “Great Boiling Valley,” and standing among the hissing vents with Mt Fuji on the horizon is an experience you will not forget. Here is what makes it special and what to know before you go.

How It Was Formed

Owakudani was created by a volcanic eruption of Mount Hakone thousands of years ago, and the area is still geothermally active today. Sulfur vents, bubbling pools, and drifting steam give the valley an otherworldly, moon-like look. It sits within the larger Hakone region, a scenic hot-spring resort area southeast of Mt Fuji that features on our tours alongside Lake Ashi.

What to Know

  • A geothermal valley formed by an ancient Hakone eruption.
  • Reached by the scenic Hakone Ropeway high over the steam.
  • Famous for kuro-tamago, black eggs boiled in the hot springs.
  • Great views of Mt Fuji on clear days.
  • Can close temporarily when volcanic gas levels rise.

The Famous Black Eggs

Owakudani’s signature treat is kuro-tamago, or black eggs. Ordinary eggs are boiled in the valley’s sulfur-rich hot springs, which turn the shells jet black, though the egg inside looks and tastes normal. Local legend says eating one adds seven years to your life. They are sold warm at stalls near the top, and trying one is a fun tradition for visitors.

Getting There and Good to Know

The classic way to reach Owakudani is the Hakone Ropeway, which glides high above the steaming valley for wonderful views, Mt Fuji included on a clear day. Because the area is volcanically active, it occasionally closes or restricts access when sulfur gas levels rise, so conditions can change. On a guided tour, your guide handles the timing and the ropeway, and will know if the day’s conditions allow a visit.

See It on a Fuji and Hakone Tour

Owakudani pairs perfectly with a Lake Ashi cruise and the views of Mt Fuji for a full day of scenery southwest of Tokyo. It is a highlight of the Hakone region and an easy, memorable stop with a guide taking care of the logistics. Ask us about our Mt Fuji and Hakone day tours.
